These requirements may form part of catalogue licensing agreements and can include expectations around monitoring, reporting, governance and enforcement.

Tuned Global’s Service Manipulation Detection and Prevention framework, referred to as SMD, provides a structured set of monitoring, detection, review and reporting controls within the Tuned Global Music Cloud Platform.

SMD is available as an optional platform extension. It is activated and configured by the Tuned Global team for an individual service based on its licensing obligations, business model and reporting requirements. To enable SMD, contact your Tuned Global representative or support team.

What streaming manipulation includes

Streaming manipulation, sometimes described as streaming fraud or service manipulation, can involve automated, coordinated or otherwise illegitimate activity intended to make music consumption appear greater than it really is.

Examples can include:

• automated or scripted playback;
• coordinated activity across multiple accounts;
• excessive or repetitive listening that is inconsistent with typical user behaviour;
• unusual concentrations or sudden bursts of activity;
• account, device or access patterns associated with artificial consumption.

An unusual pattern does not necessarily prove that fraud has occurred. SMD identifies activity that may require further analysis and applies structured review processes before consequential action is taken.

Designed for evolving rights-holder requirements

Streaming manipulation controls are becoming an increasingly important part of catalogue licensing, compliance and rights-holder oversight.

Rights holders may require services to demonstrate that they can:

• monitor for suspicious or artificial streaming activity;

What SMD does

Manipulation is rarely identifiable from one data point alone. SMD evaluates patterns across several parts of the service ecosystem so that activity can be considered in context.

These signals, and more, are evaluated together rather than treated as independent proof of manipulation. The signals available may also differ depending on the features and business model of the service.

From detection to action

SMD uses both automated controls and structured governance processes.

A typical detection and review flow includes:

1. Monitoring Relevant streaming, account and service activity is monitored for patterns that may indicate artificial consumption.
2. Identification Automated rules and statistical analysis identify activity that differs materially from expected behaviour.
3. Review Flagged activity is assessed through documented review and escalation processes. A flag represents an indicator for investigation, not an automatic determination of fraud.
4. Decision An outcome is determined using the available evidence, applicable contractual terms and the configuration of the service.
5. Action Where appropriate, Tuned Global may discount or exclude affected plays from royalty calculations or chart reporting. Account-level action may also be taken in accordance with the service’s terms and policies.
6. Audit and reporting Decisions and adjustments are recorded to support consistency, traceability and reporting integrity.

The specific response depends on the nature, confidence and impact of the activity identified.

Reporting and transparency

Subject to the applicable commercial agreement, service configuration, confidentiality requirements and data protection obligations, Tuned Global may provide structured information about detected manipulation.

Reporting may include:

• summaries of plays discounted or excluded from reporting;
• trends observed across a defined reporting period;
• enforcement or remediation activity;
• information supporting agreed reporting adjustments.

The format, frequency and level of detail available depend on the service and the requirements agreed between Tuned Global, the client and relevant rights holders.

Reporting is generated through controlled data processes intended to support consistent and reproducible adjustments to performance metrics.

Activation and service configuration

SMD is an optional extension to the Tuned Global Music Cloud Platform. It is enabled at service level and must be activated by the Tuned Global team.

Clients wishing to use SMD should contact their Tuned Global representative or the Tuned Global support team. Tuned Global will review the service requirements and confirm the appropriate configuration.

Configuration may take into account:

• rights-holder and licensing requirements;
• the service’s business and subscription model;
• the platform signals available for analysis;

Developers do not require access to the underlying detection logic. Any service-specific data inputs, integration requirements and reporting outputs are confirmed with Tuned Global during activation.

SMD is activated and configured by the Tuned Global team. It is not exposed as a standalone public API, and clients do not receive access to its detection rules, thresholds or internal scoring logic.

Developers should ensure that playback activity is logged accurately using the API appropriate to their Tuned Global implementation. Complete and reliable play data supports rights-holder reporting and provides the activity signals required by SMD.

Security and confidentiality

Effective manipulation detection depends on keeping the detailed operation of the controls confidential.

To protect Tuned Global, its clients, rights holders and legitimate users, public documentation does not disclose:

• individual detection thresholds or play limits;
• scoring logic or combinations of rules;
• internal model parameters;
• detailed data schemas used for detection;
• the weighting assigned to individual signals;
• internal investigation procedures;
• precise enforcement triggers.

These controls are maintained and refined internally as manipulation techniques, service configurations and industry requirements evolve.

Scope and limitations

SMD is designed to reduce exposure to manipulation and strengthen confidence in streaming data. It does not guarantee that every instance of manipulation will be identified or that a service will be entirely free from fraudulent activity.

The framework:
